Life is all about action and reaction.
So are you taking action or simply reacting to everything around you and what do you want your life to look like?
My life used to be a series of reactions. I would go from one drama to another, navigating the best I could from one to the next. Between work and the kids and the husband and the family, it was all I could do some days to stay afloat.
Guess what happened?
I got exhausted. It is very tiring putting out fire after fire only to see the next fire and put that one out. With little or no appreciation.
The reaction comes from the belief that people will do one thing or another if I do not do this or that. I wanted to be the person for everyone. In the end I lost myself. And one day I woke up wondering where my life had gone.
So how do you get out of this cycle?
You take the “re” out of reaction. It is time to take action. To seriously look at your life and take some action that will support your vision of your life, the bigger picture of life.
I made a plan. I knew my life was going to be dedicated to helping people. I knew that I was going to create a company where helping people help people was the main focus. So I took courses that supported that, I read books that created that end. I started small and I am now doing that full time.
In essence I stopped reacting to the fires going on around me. I handled my stuff and got on with my life. What I began to realize is that people where I worked at the time were not going to remember me doing what I was doing, in fact they probably forgot about me the next week.
I took my life back.
I can remember watching someone close to me work hard for 20+ years in his company, so proud of the fact that he had been in business that long, have a hard time returning a phone call I made to him or would cut the conversation short because he was soooo busy. Several months later he ended up divorcing his wife of 20+ years, closing his business, and having little to show monetarily for 26 years of his life.
The lesson for me was simple. Stop reacting in your life. Live your life. If you are so busy doing what you do not like, you will end up in this so situation. You will create it.
So if you are going to create something, create something that is what you really want. Create a life that makes sense to you. Start doing what you love to do for that is your purpose.
Start with a piece of paper and at the top write down, “My vision” At 80 years old what are you going to be excited about, what are you going to be proud of, what is going to be the highlight of this life, what am I excited to learn in this lifetime.
And then in the next 3 days take a step towards it. If it is family, make a date with them. My vision is to have my family around me when I am 80 so that meant I needed to have a relationship with them now. Working 16 hours a day was not going to support relationship building.
